Ingredients & Variations

Meat – Choose your protein! Ground pork, beef, chicken, turkey, sausage, shrimp, or vegetarian; choose eggs, tofu, or black beans!

Vegetables – Aside from packaged coleslaw, step up the flavor and nutritional benefits by adding some shredded brussels sprouts, shredded daikon radish, diced broccoli or cauliflower, even some spring peas, chopped water chestnuts, or sliced green onions.

Seasonings – Soy sauce, garlic, and ginger are infused into the protein and veggies here, but feel free to add a dash of red pepper flakes or sriracha for a spicy flair!

How to Make Instant Pot Egg Roll in a Bowl

  1. Saute pork with seasonings and soy sauce.
  2. Turn Instant Pot to OFF and add ½ the broth, and coleslaw mix.
  3. Close cover, seal, then cook (as per recipe below).
  4. Quick release and stir contents.

Scoop into bowls and garnish with cilantro, sesame seeds, or green onions, as desired.

How to Make Wonton Chips

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F while Instant Pot is preheating on saute.
  2. Cut egg roll wrappers into strips and brush with oil.
  3. Bake for 4-5 minutes until bubbly and brown. WATCH these carefully because they go from brown to burned very fast!
  4. Let chips cool and enjoy with your egg roll bowls!

Storing Leftovers

This recipe is so easy that you’ll want to double the recipe to freeze for future meals!

For best results, keep leftovers in a container with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator for up to three days. Freeze portions in zippered bags for up to a month. Reheat in the microwave and re-season with a dash of soy sauce!

Instant Pot Egg Roll in a Bowl

6 qt Instant Pot

Ingredients  

  • 1 pound ground pork or chicken, turkey or beef
  • 1 bag pre-shredded cole slaw mix 1 pound, found in the produce section near the bagged salads
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon pepper or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • cilantro & sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions 

  • Place Instant Pot on saute. When it is hot, add the pork, seasonings, and soy sauce. Brown the meat. When no pink remains drain the meat of excess oil.
  • Turn off the Instant Pot off and add the ½ cup chicken broth. Add the coleslaw mix. DO NOT stir. Place the lid back on the pot and turn the pressure valve to Sealing.
  • Set Instant Pot on manual high pressure for 0 minutes. For a newer model Instant Pot, select the pressure cook button instead for 0 minutes (to do this hit the timer button until it reaches 0). The pot is still hot and will keep pressure cooking the ingredients.
  • When the timer is finished, perform a quick release. When pressure is released, open slowly and stir.
  • Spoon into bowls and garnish with cilantro and sesame seeds. Enjoy!

Notes

Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for 3 days and in the freezer for 1 month.

    After the 0 min lid lift off, we add a bag of bean sprouts, toss it with tongs and slap the lid back on for another 5 min of just using the ambient heat to wilt the sprouts.

    This turned out very watery. I followed the directions. I now remember another recipe that I used that called for no chicken broth. I’m going back to that one because the coleslaw releases water as it cooks. No was excited to see what was in the pot when it was done. Tasted fine.

    I’ve had this pinned for a while and just never took the time to try it but I’m so glad I finally did! I bought all the ingredients but couldn’t find ground chicken. I know you can use other ground meats but I’m not a huge fan of pork/sausage so I bought fresh chicken breasts instead. I cooked them in the pressure cooker and shredded them. When I added them back in, I added the spices and all the liquids then the cole slaw mix. It was still just as tasty and so simple! This will definitely go into rotation!

    I’ve shared this recipe with more people than I can count!
    I’ve used ground beef and even some leftover steak pieces, which was my personal favorite. I also save out about a fourth of the cabbage to stir in after it’s cooked to have some with a little crunch.

    I also love veggies, so added another bag of slaw, a cup each of matchstick carrots, a sliced sweet onion, Bak Choy, and 1 T oyster sauce. This time I used extra lean ground turkey breast and browned it in a little sesame oil, but I also picked up a bag of frozen petite salad shrimp for the next time. My favorite Chinese restaurant always puts shrimp in their egg rolls. I normally eat the veggies on the inside and leave the shell because I don’t like the grease. Thanks for a great, easy recipe.

    This is a great quick dinner. We use ground chicken for the meat so no draining required. I double the spices and soy sauce to give it an extra punch. Watch those egg roll wrappers carefully! They go from light golden brown to charred in less than a minute.

    I made this to today for hubby and me and it was fantastic!!
    Made it just as the directions said. Changed 1 thing.
    I had some garlic infused oil, so that’s what I brushed on the egg roll wrappers and put them in the air fryer for 3 mins at 370 degrees.

    I’d made this recipe a year ago or so and I remember it being good, but after making it tonight, I found I needed to add additional garlic, ginger and liquid aminos. That made it 👍🏻. I did recently get an IP air fryer lid and air fried the wonton pieces in that instead of using the oven. Super easy, but I was limited on batch size. Thankfully, they only took 3 minutes for each batch. 😁

    Delicious, quick recipe. I use ground pork.
    Love the wontons, but if I am especially lazy; buying the wonton strips from the salad aisle is a quick substitute.
    Serve with a little sweet and sour sauce.
    Makes 4 average servings.

    I might try in my 3qt next time….or maybe double in 6 qt depending on size of group. Anyone know if this would work?

    This was a great technique. I usually make this in stages on the stove, but this was a real time saver.I never knew about the “0” setting, but it worked great for cooking the coleslaw mix without turning it to mush. Instead of powdered spices, I used shallots, green onions, fresh grated ginger and added fish sauce, sesame oil and sambal olek to the liquids. Topped with chopped cilantro for serving.

    This recipe is quick, easy & delicious! It was a big hit at our house.

    I did add bean threads/cellophane noodles which were prepared, rinsed and drained per package instructions.

    The noodles were poured on top of the meat right before adding the coleslaw mix to the instant pot.

    Good eats! I didn’t bother with the wontons and I did this in a skillet. I scrambled 2 eggs first, mincing them, then removed them from the pan to add back at the end. Added fresh garlic, white part of a bunch of scallions, and ginger along with no sodium “Spicy Thai” seasoning while cooking the pork. When it was done, I then added the coleslaw mix, along with bits of broccoli, water chestnuts, bias cut pea pods and a couple tablespoons “Mr. Yoshida’s” sauce (omitting the soy sauce). Tossed the scrambled eggs and scallion greens on top, quick stir and done! Quick, easy and so good! Thanks a bunch! Tomorrow’s leftovers will be served over rice.

    I made some substitutes. Used 1/2 large cabbage i had on hand. Used nacho ships instead of the egg roll wraps. It was delicious. I garnished with spicy mustard.     Is it possible to use beef broth instead of bone broth? Would it taste worse in the instant pot? Not sure where to get bone broth from.

    1. i used beef because that was what i had. it really was delicious so i don’t know what difference the broth really makes

    2. Beef broth works fine too. I use it when I can’t find the bone broth (look for it with the box broths).

    I used fresh ginger and added thinly sliced onions and carrots to the mixture before cooking under pressure.
    With this being 0 on the pressure timer, how do I get it to cook a little less time so my veggies are a little bit more crisper?

    The first time I made this, I didn’t have ground pork on hand, so used ground beef. I also didn’t have any ginger, so added a TBS of fish sauce, and some sesame oil and some sesame seeds. It was very good and I ate on it all week at work. I did wish for more cabbage in it. Today was grocery day, so I picked up some ground pork and ginger. Just made it with the addition of fish sauce, sesame seeds and added sesame oil after it cooked. I have to say – the ground pork is MUCH better than the ground beef in terms of texture. Oh, and I added a second bag of slaw mix – now I have a perfect ratio (for me) of meat to cabbage and will be making this often! Since I’m diabetic, I can’t use the baked wontons. But am waiting for my order of Cut Da Carb flatbread to come in, and will bake some of those up the next time I make this!

    I used hamburger meat, and didn’t have any ginger on hand, so added some Fish Sauce and Sesame Oil, and sprinkled some sesame seeds over it when it was done. I probably would do two bags of coleslaw mix next time. Eating right now for lunch!

    REALLY yummy and versatile!! You can do so many things with this!! One of my most favorite things that I have made so far!! I used ground pork along with chicken broth. Technically, I cut the recipe in half and had no problems with doing that. No adjustments needed to be made on the cooking instructions.     Yum! It was a definite hit with my family. I used 1 lb chicken tenderloins. I browned on sauce, added the liquids and spices, cooked for at 13 minutes at pressure. The chicken shredded nicely then I cooked the cabbage as suggested.

    Fixed this for the first time tonighy. Had to use turkey since my dinky little town has a dinky little store. I had to drive an hr to a store that had egg roll wrappers! Anywho, I think I needed a bigger pkg of coleslaw mix. How many ounces in the pkg you recommend? What are the conversions for using fresh garlic & ginger? I used organic chicken broth instead of bone broth because I’m out. I also have a busted oven and the small toaster oven wasn’t cutting it so I jusy fried the egg roll wrappers *some a little too done – they get darker after you take them out* in a skillet with olive oil. Anyone doing it this way, keep your temp low, precut the amount you want, and keep the tongs handy! Hubs and I neither like cooked cabbage and he was skeptical but said it’s a keeper. Other than frying the chips *until my oven is replaced* this was the easiest thing to make!

Not so worried about Keto or carbs so the next time I make this for the fam, I might use chow menu noodles instead of wontons. Those were great tho, but a little work.     This turned out really good and is a great lower carb meal. I used 1/2 pound of ground turkey, fresh ginger and garlic, shredded a small head of cabbage, 2 carrots and added celery. I also saved some of the cabbage to add after it cooked (as suggested in an IP group), but I don’t think it made much difference. It would be perfect to prepare the meat, seasonings and broth ahead of time (and possibly freeze it) to have ready for a busy night. I baked 1/2 package of egg roll wrappers brushed with a little olive oil and that was enough for the meal. I think next time I might use more oil or use the prepared crispy chinese noodles in the summer.

        I made this on the stove and it was very good! My 10 year old daughter liked it too and she’s VERY picky. I put the egg roll wrappers in for about 15 minutes…5 minutes wasn’t enough to crisp them.

    1. Hi Dot! When the nutritional values were calculated it actually included the whole pack of wonton wrappers. I have updated the nutritional value to read correctly now.

    I really like this recipe and so does my family. I use two bags of slaw mix. I made it with ground beef the first two times and lean ground pork this week. Either way, it’s a winner.

    I made this last night and am in love. Trying to cut down a few pounds so I made a few tweaks. Did 1/3 pork and 2/3 low fat beef for the meat. Added the whites of the scallions while cooking the meat and fresh bean sprouts in with the cabbage. And of course extra fresh garlic and ginger versus powdered. Used braggs aminos instead of the soy sauce. Topped with the scallion greens to garnish. It was so so so good!!! Thanks for the recipe

    I was going to make this just for myself but my husband loved it. I used a large saute pan on the stovetop and it came together so quickly. He added red pepper flakes and I added pickled ginger. We loved the eggroll wrappers made into scoops. we tried corn chips but too salty.

    I made this tonight for my Keto husband and picky kids. I don’t even care if the kids like it… because more for me. Super yummy. And as much as I love my Instapot I made this on the stove in 20 minutes. I used fresh ginger and garlic instead of powder.

    I didn’t see how many servings it is supposed to make. Is it possible to find that out?

    1. Yes it could. You would cook the meat in the wok, then add the soy sauce and seasonings. Stir that up and then throw the cabbage on top and let it cook down until it’s tender (5-10 minutes depending on how soft you want it)

    1. You select manual then adjust the timer to 0. This means the Instant Pot will get up to pressure, then immediately switch off. This is perfect for this because it cooks the cabbage without turning it to mush. Hope that helps!

    1. Hi Amanda! Sure, but I think it would be better to do on the stove because it does not take that long to soften up the cabbage. You could cook the meat in a skillet, add the seasonings, then throw on the cabbage and let it cook for 5-10 minutes (based on desired tenderness). If you wanted to do it in a crock put, you would still have to brown the meat first and then add the seasonings. I think you would put in on low for about an hour or so after you add the cabbage. I have not tried this myself but it seems like it would work! 🙂

        1. Hi Karen, prep time is 10 minutes, cook time is 12 minutes, pressure build time is 15 minutes. Total cooking time is 37 minutes. I hope this helps!
